What is AMA Citation Style?

AMA (American Medical Association) Citation Style is widely used for writing in the biomedical sciences.

AMA Citation Style uses dot "." as the field end sign and contains the following fields in the same order as listed below:

  • Author, or authors separated by comma ",". For each author, list the last name first followed by the first and middle initials without periods. In case of 7 or more authors, list the first 3 authors followed by "et al".
  • Article title.
  • Journal name, abbreviated and italicized.
  • Volume and page numbers in "year;issue(volume):page-page" format. Or preprint posting date.
  • DOI or URL, formatted as metadata and without the ending dot ".". An access date field should be added for URL.
