ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID)
is a number that uniquely identifies authors and contributors of scholarly communication.
ORCID was first announced in 2009, and is maintained by ORCID, Inc..
An ORCID is an 16-digit code, divided by a hyphen into four 4-digit numbers as shown below:
NNNN-NNNN-NNNN-NNNC
where:
N is in the set {0,1,2,...,9}
C is in the set {0,1,2,...,9,X}
For example, Stephen Hawking's ORCID is "0000-0002-9079-593X".
