A
PubMed Central® (PMC) is a free full-text archive of biomedical and life
sciences journal literature at the U.S. National Institutes of Health's National
Library of Medicine (NIH/NLM).
As of 2022, PMC contains 7.6 million research papers from thousands of journals.
It stores research papers in NISO Z39.96-2015 JATS XML format,
which represents the structure and meaning in a relatively simple
and human-readable form.
PMC offers the following main services on its Websites:
- Browse PMC - ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/journals:
Allows you to browse a list of journals that archive some or
all of their articles in PMC.
- Search PMC - ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc:
Allows you to search for full-text articles in PMC,
type the term or concept you are looking for into the
search box at the top of any PMC page and click the search button or hit enter.
- View an Article - ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/doi/{doi}:
Allows you to view the content of an article of a given DOI.
- Cloud Service -
Allows you to access the PMC Open Access Subset and Author Manuscript Dataset
through the Amazon Web Service (AWS).
- FTP Service - ftp.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pub/pmc:
Allows you to use FTP clients for bulk download, individual article download,
and PDF download from PMC Open Access Subset, Author Manuscript Dataset,
and Historical OCR Dataset.
- OAI-PMH Service - ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/oai/oai.cgi:
Allows to use OAI-PMH protocol to access
metadata of all items in the PubMed Central (PMC) archive,
as well as to the full text of a subset of these items.
- OA Web Service API - ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/utils/oa/oa.fcgi:
Allows you to discover downloadable resources from the PMC Open Access Subset.
These articles are available for download from our FTP site in tgz (tar'd, gzipped)
format, or, for those articles that have them, in PDF format as well.
- E-Utilities - eutils.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/eutils:
Allows you to access the PMC Open Access Subset with E-Utilities.
- BioC API - ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/research/bionlp/RESTful/pmcoa.cgi:
Allows you to access PMC Open Access Subset and PMC Author Manuscript Collection
in BioC format.
- PMC ID Converter - ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/utils/idconv:
Allows you to convert between the various IDs used in our databases,
such as PMCIDs, PMIDs, DOIs and more.
- Literature Citation Exporter - api.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/lit/ctxp/v1/pmc:
Allows you to get formatted citations and tag formats,
such as MEDLINE or RIS, for journal articles from PubMed and PMC.
