What is URN for ISSN Number?

✍: FYIcenter.com

A

URN (Uniform Resource Name) for an ISSN number is a permanent identifier for the ISSN number.

A generic URN consists of 3 parts, URN, NID (Namespace IDentifier) and NSS (Namespace Specific String), expressed as:

URN:{NID}:{NSS}

To express an ISSN number as a URN, the ISSN label is used as the NID, and the ISSN number xxxx-xxxs is used as the NSS. So the URN for an ISSN number has the following format:

URN:ISSN:xxxx-xxxx

For example, "URN:ISSN:2719-6488" is the URN for the print version of "Journal of Mother and Child".

You can use the URN on a "URN:ISSN" resolver to retrieve information about the URN. For example, you get more information about "URN:ISSN:2719-6488" using the ISSN International Centre resolver as shown below:

https://urn.issn.org/URN:ISSN:2719-6488

which redirects you to:
  https://portal.issn.org/resource/ISSN/2719-6488
