A

DataCite is an international not-for-profit organization which aims to improve data citation in order to:

  • establish easier access to research data on the Internet.
  • increase acceptance of research data as legitimate, citable contributions to the scholarly record.
  • support data archiving that will permit results to be verified and re-purposed for future study.

The primary means of establishing easier access to research data is by DataCite members assigning persistent identifiers, such as digital object identifiers (DOIs), to data sets. Although currently leveraging the well-established DOI infrastructure, DataCite takes an open approach to identifiers, and considers other systems and services that help forward its objectives.

DataCite offers the following services on its Websites:

  • DataCite Fabrica - doi.datacite.org: Allows DataCite members to create, find, connect and track all of their DOIs and metadata.
  • DataCite Commons - commons.datacite.org: Describes works, people, and organizations, and their connections and allows users to search for them. They are identified by persistent identifiers (PIDs): works (DOI), people (ORCID ID), and organizations (ROR ID), and have standard metadata that describe them and the connections to each other.
  • DataCite REST API - api.datacite.org: Allows any user to retrieve, query and browse DataCite DOI metadata records. In addition, DataCite Repositories can register DOIs and DataCite Members can manage Repositories and prefixes via the API.
  • DataCite OAI-PMH API - oai.datacite.org: Exposes metadata stored in the DataCite Metadata Store (MDS) using the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH).
  • DataCite GraphQL API - api.datacite.org/graphql: Supports queries of the DataCite API using the GraphQL query language.
