Crossref is an official digital object identifier (DOI) Registration Agency of the International DOI Foundation. It is run by the Publishers International Linking Association Inc.

Crossref maintains a DOI database of all DOI entries registered by Crossref. As of April 9, 2020, Crossref's DOI database has about 112.5 million DOI entries.

Crossref offers the following services on its Websites:

  • DOI Content Registration - Allows Crossref members to register and update metadata via machine or human interfaces.
  • DOI Reference linking - Enables researchers to follow a link from the reference list to other full-text documents, helping them to make connections and discover new things. For example, https://doi.org/10.7774/cevr.2016.5.1.19 allows readers to access the DOI content provided by the DOI publisher.
  • DOI Crossmark - Gives readers quick and easy access to the current status of a DOI, including any corrections, retractions, or updates to that record.
  • DOI Metadata Web Portal - Allows anyone to search and reuse the DOI metadata in sophisticated ways.
  • DOI Metadata API - Allows anyone to look up metadata records or DOIs in volume, using REST API, XML API, OAI-PMH, and OpenURL.
  • DOI Metadata Plus - Gives paid users enhanced access to all our supported APIs, guarantees service levels and support, and additional features such as snapshots and priority service/rate limits.
